Change-up: Tabletop Games (Part 2)

September 13th, 2013

Hey, everyone! This is my second post in the new Change-up category. I originally wrote this as one long piece but it was just too massive. So I’ve broken it into three parts. As always, leave comments and let me know what you think!

Continuing from where we left off, here is the second section!

Are there a lot of tabletop games? Didn’t we cover the human experience with Monopoly and Risk?

No, we didn’t quite cover everything with those two.

Tons of tabletop games exist. So I’m going to go over a few and share some of my favorites. Some may have been featured in a Fan Friday post and others might be at some point.

Deck Building Games

Deck building games are card games. Everyone starts with the same cards and then each player chooses to acquire cards throughout the game. I’ll give a couple of examples.

Legendary is actually one of my favorites. It’s a Marvel game that utilizes tons of villains and heroes. Once you pick the heroes and villains you want to play with, you shuffle them into respective decks. Villains come onto the board, occupying one area of the city. Your hero cards come into the headquarters. Players then buy heroes (with their starting cards) and work together to fight the villains before they destroy the city. It’s cooperative, it has a ton of variation, and it’s one of my absolute favorite games.

This is the new expansion coming out soon! I was able to get my hands on a copy during GenCon!

Ascension is another great one, though it’s not cooperative. This is a fantasy themed game (with amazing art) where items, heroes, and monsters get shuffled into one big deck. Then you acquire heroes and defeat monsters, building your deck as you go along. The objective of the game is to acquire honor, which you do by acquiring heroes and defeating monsters. Once the honor pool (represented by a pile of gems, which are plastic pieces) runs out, the game is over and everyone counts up their total honor. This is another fun game. I love the theme, the art, and the multiple ways you can win. While you’re playing, it’s never quite clear who is in the lead because you can acquire gems to attain honor, but every hero you acquire also has an honor value on the card. So someone with a smaller pile of gems could have more heroes that tip the scale in their favor.

Roleplaying Games

Roleplaying games can be a great bonding experience, combined with escapism, and brought together by story. Depending on the system you want to use, it can have a low or high entry cost. These are games like Dungeons and Dragons, Dark Heresy, Edge of the Empire, Warhammer, and many, many more.

Dungeons and Dragons is the game I have the most experience with. But don’t worry, there are common elements in most roleplaying games that I’ll talk about.

While Miniatures aren't always necessary, they can help create a scene.

While Miniatures aren’t always necessary, they can help create a scene.

First, someone needs to be elected as a game-master, dungeon-master, or whatever you want to call it. Essentially, this is the storyteller. They’re responsible for making the world come to life. And if you think that sounds like work, you’re right. But it can also be a lot of fun.

Second, the other players make characters. Now, lots of games have different rules for making characters. However, here’s the binding part, it’s all about personality. Making that character come to life is what allows them to interact with everyone else. Roleplaying games allow for escapism, adventure, as well as great interaction.

Third, tell a great story. The person running the game creates the world and characters the other players will interact with. Then, the other players create characters. But now you work together to tell a fantastic story. Work together, be crazy, be funny, and have a great time!

There are tons of great games out there. Fantasy Flight Games just released an amazing Star Wars system called Edge of the Empire. It’s fantastic.

While I'm talking about D&D in the post, GenCon had some awesome stuff for Edge of the Empire.

Why pick a roleplaying game? While you might spend more money on it than other games, you’ll also get a lot of mileage. And roleplaying games are continuous. There’s a story arc (or maybe an episodic adventure arc) that picks up every time you play. This makes it a great and stable pick for weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly game sessions that maintain a continuous theme, tone, and story.

Adventure games

Descent is an adventure game that can best be described as almost a light roleplaying game. The characters are premade, there isn’t much emphasis on roleplaying, but you can have fun adventures in dungeons and whatnot.

Party Games

Apples to Apples can be a fun, family friendly party game. Everyone takes turns being the judge. The judge pulls a green card (an adjective) and reads it to the group. The other players then put down a red card (a noun, usually) that they feel goes with the adjective. The judge then chooses a winner. Super simple, clean, and fun. Usually my friends try to twist it by attempting to pair cards into offensive combos.

Cards Against Humanity is a similar concept. The judge (who changes every turn) reads a black card. This card might be something like, “instead of coal, Santa is giving out _______ to naughty children for Christmas.” And then there are the white cards. And they might include a word, a phrase, or an elaborate scenario. It’s offensive. You don’t need to try and be offensive, the game itself is horrendous. And if you’re into the darker side of humor, you’ll love it. If you’re not, don’t even look into it.

Other

This topic is massive and I could just keep going on and on.

X-Wing Miniatures Game is fantastic for recreating Star Wars space battles.

Mage Wars is a fantastic game about dueling wizards with spellbooks and magic.

Warhammer: Invasion simulates two factions sieging one another’s capital cities.

Boss Monster is a quirky deck builder where you play a villain and set up rooms in your dungeon to trap heroes that come into town.

Game of Thrones has a board game or intrigue that will have you and your friends eyeing one another suspiciously for hours.

There are so many great games out there! Truly, there’s something out there for everyone!

This is the end of part two. Please let me know what you think and I’ll see you on Sunday for part three!

Fan Friday: Coheed and Cambria

March 8th, 2013

Hey, everyone! It’s Fan Friday and I’m really excited about this one! Last night I got the chance to see Coheed and Cambria live in Orlando. I’ve been waiting to see them play for a while and the whole experience was amazing. I wanted to feature them earlier for Fan Friday but I decided to wait because I knew the concert would be coming up.

If you haven’t heard of them before, I would definitely suggest checking them out. They’re not for everyone, but what band is? I love music and so do these guys, it’s apparent in every song they write.

Their most recent albums, sold as two parts, are The Afterman: Ascension and The Afterman: Descension. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that these albums collect their best songs to date. I’ve been a fan for quite some time but I was never really a die-hard fan. I didn’t feel the urge to attend one of their concerts, I listened to their stuff often but I enjoyed being a big fan from afar. I’m not particularly fond of crowds, so concerts are a rarity for me anyway.

A friend of mine put on Ascension the night is came out and suddenly I found myself ordering a collector edition box set. Seriously, I wanted to see them play live, I wanted the early VIP pass, the collector stuff, all of it. Ascension/Descension are albums that I can put on anytime and listen to. And honestly, as much as I loved Ascension, they completely outdid themselves with Descension.

If you’re interested in checking out their music, they have videos for Dark Side of Me, The Afterman, and Domino the Destitute. I’m not a big music video person, but they’re all really solid. My personal favorite from Descension is Gravity’s Union, though it doesn’t have a video yet.

Seeing them play live was really great. They gave an awesome performance, playing lots of great selections, and the crowd was really into it. Truly an awesome night with a sold out crowd and some great friends. If you get the chance, check out some of their music. If you’re already a fan, try to see them in concert because they really don’t disappoint. The energy in the room was really amazing and their performance was flawless.

Now it’s your turn! Are you a Coheed & Cambria fan? If so, what’s your favorite album or song? What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to? Who would you like to see in concert that you haven’t been able to yet?

Fan Friday: Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer!

February 15th, 2013

Hey, everyone! It’s Fan Friday and this week I’m talking about a fantasy themed card game called Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer. For those of you unfamiliar, Ascension is a deck building card game. If you don’t quite know what I’m talking about, don’t worry. Two months ago, I was also unfamiliar with the term but now I can explain the premise.

It’s 2-4 players, so a few of your friends can enjoy it as well.

With Ascension, each player begins with ten cards shuffle into a deck. You then draw five cards from your deck and that’s your hand.

In the middle of the board (yes, there’s a pretty cool looking board and it keeps everything super organized) is the main deck. This deck has things like monsters and heroes. Six cards are drawn from the top of that deck and put into the center.

Next, you use your hand to defeat monsters or acquire heroes. Heroes and other similar card go into your deck and can be used as the game progresses. For monsters killed, heroes acquired, and so on, you gain honor in the form of gems. At the end of the game (when the gems run out), whoever has acquired the most honor wins. If you think Zuko would love this game and scream “honor!” all the time, you’re right. If you didn’t catch that reference, don’t worry about it.

That’s the best and simplest explanation I can give without actually showing you the cards and playing the game. Believe me, this game is worth playing.

Why do I love it?

Art: I mentioned that it’s a fantasy themes game, right? Well the art is really great on these cards. I love card art. Honestly, I just love art. In card games or board games, I think art can make or break you. Monster, heroes, and other cards have themes attached to them. You can tell because the art is different. Color choices are different. The whole game is great and the art makes it even better.

Competition: I’ve played various tabletop and card games but this one is probably the most enjoyable one because you’re not in direct “combat” with one another. I enjoy going head to head with someone, I enjoy attacking their characters, cards, and other stuff, it can be a fun experience. However, such games usually lose their casual and fun tone. Ascension is different. You’re vanquishing monsters, acquiring cards, and gaining honor. You’re seeing who can acquire the most honor, so the game is less about the other player and more about how well you can do. At the end, you find out if you’ve done a better job than the other player. To me, it’s a casual and fun way to play.

Fair: Here’s the deal. Players start with the same cards, see all the same cards in the center area, and have equal opportunities. It’s extremely fair and even a new player can beat an experienced player if they get the hang of the game.

Price: This is debatable with anyone but I think the game is reasonably priced and the expansions are a great value for what they cost. Here’s what I really love, they’re closed sets. You can play wit just an expansion. You can add the expansion to your game. Or, you can play an expansion (2p) when you have less people and the main game when you have more (2-4p). HEre’s the other thing I love. Unlike trading card game (where card rarity is a factor), you’ll never find yourself spending big money to have the rare card that gives you an edge. It’s fair, you pay once (or more if you’re interested in expansions), but you never need to buy more. You don’t need to keep up with new sets if you enjoy the original.

Close games: I’ve had a ton of close games. Rarely have I seen someone lose by a substantial amount, maybe just once. Otherwise, I’ve seen and taken part in many close games. While you may still lose, it’s always nice to know that the game was close. On that same note, when playing multiple games, I’ve never seen someone dominate the field. The title of winner gets passed back and forth pretty regularly because the game is incredibly balanced.

Mystery: The cards you acquire are worth a certain amount of honor as well. You combine the honor you’ve acquired in gems with the honor you’ve acquired from your deck. This means that someone can have a ton of gems, but their cards aren’t worth much. If the opposing player has acquired cards with higher honor and focused less on gems, they can still win the game. You may think your winning or losing, but it’s truly a mystery until the end of the game.

Apps: That’s right, they have apps for this. Want to try it out but don’t want to make the big investment? Buy the app and see what you think. The app even teaches you how to play and then lets you play with people from around the world. It’s great, it’s reasonable, and you don’t have to shuffle a thing. Timed matches are perfect for when you only have fifteen minutes to spare.

Expansions: I love the expansions for this game! Each expansion has added something new. Buy the original, play it for a while, it’s great. Then, if you want to mix it up, check out the expansions. Each one brings something unique. Here’s something awesome, you can play expansions on their own or shuffle them into a main set. I love it, the whole game is great and the designers are truly brilliant.
