Fan Friday: Comic Book Men

March 22nd, 2013

Hi, everyone! It’s Fan Friday again and this week I’m talking about AMC’s Comic Book Men! For those of you that don’t know, this show airs Thursday nights on AMC and it’s part of their new lineup. I first started watching Comic Book Men when it would come on after The Walking Dead and The Talking Dead Sunday nights on AMC but the network moved it to Thursdays. While I liked watching it on Sunday, the new spot on Thursday nights probably means that it has a big enough following to thrive out there on its own. That’s great, especially since I love the show and want to see more of it. Plus, Sundays are a packed night for television. Now, I look forward to watching Comic Book Men every Thursday.

First, I have to admit that I’m a pretty big fan of Kevin Smith and his work. That’s really not a secret, I think he’s a really cool person and he does a lot of awesome stuff. He always comes off as being very genuine in everything he does. So before going into this show, it had two great things going for it, comic books and Kevin Smith.

Comic Book Men is a reality show in the same vein of Pawn Stars and American Pickers. I like those shows and I’ll watch them when I see them on at night, but I don’t usually make a point to record them or rush home to watch them. Comic Book Men is a different story. Even though I can record the show, I like to watch it when it first airs. Sometimes members of the show do live tweets, which is great, and there’s just something cool about seeing it when it comes on.

Why do I like it so much? It’s funny. The guys are really great and they remind me of my own friends. Sometime between late high school and early on in college, I started going to a local comic shop in Daytona Beach called Cloak and Dagger Comics. It was great to hang out in there with my friends. One of my friends worked there and the rest of us would just hang out and occasionally buy things. For new customers coming in, we were the guys that made the store look a little busy and lively during the middle of the day. We added noise, laughter, and jokes to the shop. For us, it felt like a second home.

When I watch Comic Book Men, it’s like seeing my group of friends in the shop again. It’s that same fun atmosphere where any conversation could pop up at any moment, no matter how ridiculous the premise may seem. This is the feel of the show, it’s real, it’s genuine, and it’s a lot of fun. It also doesn’t hurt that you get to see some really cool items being bought and sold. I know that if I’m ever in the area, I’m definitely going to stop in and do some shopping at Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash. Until then, I’m more than happy to watch the show!

Now it’s your turn! Have you seen Comic Book Men? Are you a fan of Kevin Smith? Are there any other shows out there similar to this one?

Fan Friday: Fiddler’s Green

March 15th, 2013

Hey, everyone, it’s Fan Friday again! This week is St. Patrick’s Day and it just so happens to be the weekend of my best friend’s bachelor party. I don’t usually talk about local places on Fan Friday but I’ll make an exception this week. I’m talking about a great pub called Fiddler’s Green in Winter Park, FL! It’s a fantastic pub with great service, delicious food, and wonderful people. If you’re somewhat familiar with the area, it’s not very far away from Rollin’s College. http://www.fiddlersgreenorlando.com/home.htm

Hands down, this place has the best fish and chips I’ve ever had in the states. To be honest, I haven’t had anything at this place that I didn’t like. For a while, a few friends and I would go there every week. We would each order something different and share our dinners. So we’ve tried just about everything on the menu and it’s all really fantastic. As for drinks, they have quite a large selection. The bar is huge and their beer menu is quite enormous. From seasonal beers to everyday favorites, they really have it all.

This is a great place to go if you want dinner with your friends, if you want to go on a date, if you want to watch a big game, or if you want to sit as the bar. From the outside, it doesn’t look very large. I don’t know if they’re using Timelord technology, but it’s definitely bigger on the inside. The seating is varied. When you walk in, to the left, a quarter of the pub is dedicated to seating for two. The lighting in this area is a little lower, it’s not right on top of the live music (if you’re there on a live music night), and it’s a great spot to sit and talk. The center of the pub is where live music takes place and there’s a lot of group seating there. This is great for drinking and eating with a bunch of friends. To the right, is a room somewhat separated from the rest of the pub. There’s a large screen in the room where they’ll play big soccer games and whatnot. This is great for large parties or groups of friend. The back quarter is dedicated to a long bar with no shortage of seating.

The atmosphere is really great. When there’s live music, the place really comes alive. Without live music, the place is has the amazing look of a classic Irish pub. Dark wood throughout and a varied collection of Irish items are scattered throughout the bar, but don’t call attention to themselves. I had the good fortune to visit Ireland years ago and this place is the best representation of an Irish pub that I’ve ever seen. If you’re ever in the area, stop in and grab a bite to eat. Their burgers are great but if you like fish and chips, you really can’t go wrong here.

Now it’s your turn! What are some local places that you love? If you like the pub feel, what are some great ones that you really like?

Fan Friday: Coheed and Cambria

March 8th, 2013

Hey, everyone! It’s Fan Friday and I’m really excited about this one! Last night I got the chance to see Coheed and Cambria live in Orlando. I’ve been waiting to see them play for a while and the whole experience was amazing. I wanted to feature them earlier for Fan Friday but I decided to wait because I knew the concert would be coming up.

If you haven’t heard of them before, I would definitely suggest checking them out. They’re not for everyone, but what band is? I love music and so do these guys, it’s apparent in every song they write.

Their most recent albums, sold as two parts, are The Afterman: Ascension and The Afterman: Descension. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that these albums collect their best songs to date. I’ve been a fan for quite some time but I was never really a die-hard fan. I didn’t feel the urge to attend one of their concerts, I listened to their stuff often but I enjoyed being a big fan from afar. I’m not particularly fond of crowds, so concerts are a rarity for me anyway.

A friend of mine put on Ascension the night is came out and suddenly I found myself ordering a collector edition box set. Seriously, I wanted to see them play live, I wanted the early VIP pass, the collector stuff, all of it. Ascension/Descension are albums that I can put on anytime and listen to. And honestly, as much as I loved Ascension, they completely outdid themselves with Descension.

If you’re interested in checking out their music, they have videos for Dark Side of Me, The Afterman, and Domino the Destitute. I’m not a big music video person, but they’re all really solid. My personal favorite from Descension is Gravity’s Union, though it doesn’t have a video yet.

Seeing them play live was really great. They gave an awesome performance, playing lots of great selections, and the crowd was really into it. Truly an awesome night with a sold out crowd and some great friends. If you get the chance, check out some of their music. If you’re already a fan, try to see them in concert because they really don’t disappoint. The energy in the room was really amazing and their performance was flawless.

Now it’s your turn! Are you a Coheed & Cambria fan? If so, what’s your favorite album or song? What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to? Who would you like to see in concert that you haven’t been able to yet?

Fan Friday: Dungeons and Dragons!

March 1st, 2013

Hey, everyone! It’s Fan Friday again! I have to say, every Friday is a reminder of just how much nerdy stuff I like. Today is just going to be about D&D, or DnD, or Dungeons and Dragons, whatever you want to call it. I like other systems but I’ll always be a fan of D&D because it’s where I started.

If you’re not familiar with it, D&D is a form of collective storytelling in a fantasy setting. There’s usually a DM (Dungeon Master) or GM (Game Master) and the rest of the people are players controlling a single character each. The DM guides the story, monsters, traps, castles, and all that good stuff, while the player’s characters explore the world.

My group of friends started playing in high school, maybe around 2004 or 2005. The books were present for a couple of years before we sat down to play a game. Most recently, I’ve been the main DM and that’s fine for now. I really prefer to DM sessions that emphasize the idea of collective storytelling, which can only come from players with strong characters. Essentially, a DM can be firm or soft in their manipulation of the story.

A DM with a firm hand can put the player “on rails.” I’ve done that before and it rarely works for me. It gets boring for me when I know what will happen every single second. So I started experimenting with sitting back and letting players choose more of their own direction. I throw a few ideas out there and see what sticks. In a way, this requires more preparation. I need to be ready for them to pick a fight, sit around and talk, look for work, or do something truly unexpected. To me, this is fun. It’s fun for the players, too. They’re shaping the story, their story, a personal and unique story.

Which edition? I don’t know, they all have their good qualities. In recent years, my friends and I have mostly been playing 4th edition. Here’s the thing about 4e, it can get really gamey really fast. Honestly, I’ve seen game in 3.5 get the same way, though. It’s up with the DM and the players to ensure that this doesn’t happen. Burden of responsibility usually fall to the DM when it comes to generating ideas for fixing the problem, but it’s a group effort. That’s where collective storytelling shines.

I’m also a big fan of RP sessions, or at least that’s what we call them. These are sessions with roleplaying and no dice. It helps the players connect, or reconnect, with their characters. They can’t sit back and say “I attack!” and throw some dice. They need to speak, interact, and think their way out of situations. It’s great but your players need to be into it, they need to be willing to invest time in thinking of a character, much like a writer might.

As far as settings go, I love Ravenloft. I’m running a Ravenloft campaign right now and if it’s the last campaign I DM, it’s fine with me. I’ve always like it and I actually waited to start something in Ravenloft until I felt confident in my abilities as a DM. In the future, I’ll probably do Fan Friday posts about specific settings in D&D. I have a few that I really like, though some can be more challenging than others when it comes to running a session.

Now it’s your turn! Have you experienced D&D? If so, what edition or play style do you prefer? What settings do you really love? Or, if you’re not all that into D&D, what other systems do you enjoy?

FAN FRIDAY: FRISKY DINGO

February 22nd, 2013

Hi, everyone! It’s Fan Friday again and today I’m talking about a show called Frisky Dingo. If you’ve ever seen Archer and enjoyed it, you would probably like Frisky Dingo because the same people created both shows.

Frisky Dingo is a fifteen minute show that found a home on Adult Swim late at night. The show only lasted two seasons and it’s a shame, because the show could have gone on much longer. Archer has a similar kind of humor, so it’s really not so bad.

Frisky Dingo’s premise is that Awesome X (a hero somewhat comparable to Iron Man with all the money but none of the intelligence) and the Xtacles need to find a new villain. The antagonist, Killface, has created a doomsday device meant to drive the earth into the sun. Killface, however, doesn’t have enough money to complete the project. Awesome X then hatches a plan to get Killface’s signature on a contract allowing Awesome X to make and distribute toys of the two characters.

Honestly, this is just the beginning of their shenanigans, which even leads to Killface attending morning talk shows in order to spread the word about his doomsday device. It plays on a lot of funny things that would come about from having superheroes and villains in the world today. Things that you wouldn’t see in comics. Venture Bros plays with this concept as well with super scientists and their villains. If I’m being honest, the Xtacles are some of the funniest characters in the show, as minions tend to be.

While most of Adult Swim’s fifteen minute shows tend to be episodic, this show has a very tight storyline that continues from one episode to the next. If I had to guess, that’s probably why the show didn’t do so well. If you missed an episode, or didn’t catch the show from the beginning, the storyline would be even weirder and running jokes wouldn’t be as humorous. I caught an episode here and there once in a while and never thought it was funny until I caught it from the beginning.

I believe Adult Swim is airing the show again in its entirety. I know there are also dvds available at many major retailers and it may (though I’m not certain) be available online or through Netflix. If you like Archer, if you’re a fan of Adult Swim, check out this show because you’ll probably enjoy it. At the very least, it’s an amusing show.

Now it’s your turn, what shows do you find to be funny with a unique premise? Have you seen Frisky Dingo and wish it would make a return?
